Outdoors in the Divide

American River Conservancy-a wonderful resource for Divide residents

The American River Conservancy is a wonderful local resource.  Headquartered in Coloma, ARC offers a wide variety of programs to teach and inspire us to enjoy and preserve our natural surroundings.  Events target all age groups.  Staff offer outreach programs in our schools, host lectures, schedule classes in photography – crafts using natural materials, study wildlife & restore wildlife habitat, lead hikes – snowshoe treks and more.  Membership supports an organization which offers education and entertainment to our community, while seeking to preserve the natural surroundings that attracted us here.

Cool Physical Therapy & Speech Services opens in new location

Having outgrown their previous location, Cool Physical Therapy & Speech Services is now open at their new location in the Holiday Shopping Center.  Jim Kreutz, Physical Therapist, and Kara Kreutz, Speech and Language Pathologist, have the reputations to match the professional ambiance found in their new offices.

Cool Fitness offers full service gym to Divide residents

Longtime residents Jim and Justine Brown have recently opened Cool Fitness, located at 2968 Hwy 49.  The recently remodeled and expanded facilities offer weights – spin – cardio – yoga – pilates and Tai Chi.  Classes are tailored to meet various interests and fitness levels.  To greet the female novice, a women’s trainer can provide introductory or ongoing guidance.  Jim and Justine, avid cyclists and runners, envision a center we’ll all want to “hang out” in, to socialize – to be inspired – to train & cross-train – to look better and feel better by improving our health.  All ages welcomed.  Celebrate your life and their opening; introductory rates offered for a limited time.

Cross Training with Hot Yoga

At 55, I can appreciate the challenge, retiring from an incredible athletic career Lance Armstrong must be experiencing.  If you’ve witnessed any portion of this year’s Tour de France, you’ve also witnessed a gifted competitor loosing his edge.  Those of us hanging on to any resemblance of athleticism as we age, have to admire his spirit and results.  Recently, someone suggested yoga as a method of cross training to enhance one’s conditioning and reverse some of the sources of pain and injury resulting from participation in other sports over the years.  In this particular case, the suggestion was to try “hot yoga” or Bikram style yoga.  I’d never heard of it!  Well, I tried it.  It nearly killed me, but I’ll be going back for more!  Traditional hot yoga takes place in a room heated to 105 degrees.  I’m told my classroom was only in the upper 80’s.  The heat warms your muscles, preventing injury and allowing for a deeper workout.  It’s 90 minutes of detoxing (sweating), stretching, heavy breathing, and strength training at an increased heart rate.  I’m told it’s great heat training and conditioning without pounding the trails or spinning the pedals.  Give it a try!

The Coolest Run and Ride & Tie 2010

This year, the Coolest Run and Ride & Tie (www.rideandtie.org) will offer 27 – 17 – 10 – 5 Mile Runs and Ride & Tie events located in Auburn Lake Trails.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience the benefits of living in the community, and have a whole lot of fun.  The Ride and Tie events involve teams made up of 2 people and 1 horse.  Each team must switch runner to rider and rider to runner a minimum of 6 times during the race, and every event must include at least 1 Vet check to insure the horse is fit to continue.  To register for this September 18th event, contact Frank or Linda at 886-0890 or coolgalinda@sbcglobal.net or download a flyer from the Ride and Tie website.

The Wildest Run in the West 100K

Qualified runners have an opportunity to run 50 miles of the “challenging and scenic” Western States Trail at this year’s Wildest Run in the West 100K, which starts in Soda Springs and finishes in Foresthill.  Shuttles deliver you from Foresthill to the start.  The same event also offers 10K and 13.1 Mile Runs.  Register at www.wildestrun.com.

Tevis Cup Voted Top Ten Endurance Competition

What do the following events have in common:  24 Hours of Le Mans – Tour de France – Dakar Rally – Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race – Cannonball Run – 4 Deserts – Tevis Cup – Marathon des Sables – La Ruta de los Conquistadores – Vendee Globe?  They’ve all been voted TOP Ten Endurance Competitions by Time Inc.

Georgetown Divide Competes at Tevis 2010

The Divide is well represented in this year’s Tevis Cup 100 Miles in One Day Ride from Truckee to Auburn.  As of July 2nd, 10 competitors will be horseback riding over the Sierras and across the American River starting and finishing by the light of the moon.  They are:  Leigh Bacco and David Meanor from Cool; Loreley Stewart and Roger Yohe from Georgetown; Katherine Mason from Garden Valley; and Mark Engman, Joe Larkin, Potato Richardson, Trina Romo and Becky Spencer from Greenwood.  The start culminates years of conditioning and training to endure the mileage, trail conditions and weather changes throughout the day and night.  Good luck riders
